CHAPTER TEN
“I told you what happened, Jeremiah. There is no reason for us to still be discussing this. They attacked her and I killed them. It’s as simple as that.”
Mira narrowed her eyes at Cole. “Is it? Is it really that simple because I don’t think it is. That girl is a trouble maker. How do you know that she didn’t lead those men on and invite them inside, only to cry foul when you returned?”
“You know damn well that’s not what happened.”
“Do I?” Mira countered. “Lacey isn’t as innocent as she acts. Don’t think I don’t know about her little nude stroll through the woods. Innocent girls don’t walk around naked trying to seduce young men.”
Cole growled. “Is that what Luke told you? That she was trying to seduce him?”
“What my son said is none of your business. But he wasn’t the only one who saw her. There were others in the woods as well. I’m just surprised it took them this long to make a move on her. She’s unmated and until she’s claimed, she’s not yours. You can’t kill everyone who looks at her.” Mira snarled.
“She is mine!” Cole growled out loud, startling Maggie. She jumped slightly then moved away from him. His body went rigid, his chest heaved with labored breaths. The veins in his arms protruded as he tightened his hands into fist. “And I will kill anyone who threatens her safety! I do mean anyone” he said and narrowed his eyes at Mira.
She looked like she was going to attack him, but Jeremiah quickly ended their argument. “Mira! Take Maggie and go back to the village” he ordered.
She stayed where she was, her eyes fixed on Cole in a heated glare.
“Now!” Jeremiah yelled.
Maggie stepped from the porch and headed into the trees. A slow smile crossed Mira’s lips as she raised her brows and shook her head at Cole. “This isn’t over.”
Before Cole could respond, Jeremiah grabbed her by the arm and turned her to face him. “Yes, it is” he said and leveled a serious look at her before kissing her forehead. “Now go. I need to talk to Cole alone.”
Mira shot Cole one last look of pure hatred before following Maggie into the woods.
“You shouldn’t get her so riled up like that” Jeremiah said to Cole as he watched his mate slink into the trees. “She’s a hard woman and sometimes, not even I can keep her in line.”
“Well, you better because I meant every word I said” Cole replied in a thick tone. He looked to the cabin, he wanted more than anything to go in and check on Lacey but he knew he had to fix things with Jeremiah first. His expression turned dark as he looked at his cousin. “So are you going to exile me now? Are you going to make me leave for defending Lacey?”
Jeremiah sighed and ran his hand through his hair. “No. I guess you did what you had to do, or at least what you think you had to do.
